The three most popular (and unregulated) extensions are:
* .com - meant for commercial organizations
* .org - meant for non-profit organizations
* .net - meant for internet infrastructure related
organizations
There are also two letter country extensions, meant for organizations from a specific country. Each country has its own registry regulating the domain names.
* .ng - Nigeria
* .ca - Canada
* .jp - Japan
* .us - United States
Finally, new extensions are still being added. Different extensions have different regulations, for example:
* .biz - for any commercial organization
* .name - meant for personal names (e.g. www.janedoe.name)
* .pro - meant for certified professionals, worldwide (for certified professional lawyers, accountants and doctors)
